COVID-19 infection among W. Visayas health workers reach 2,772

ILOILO CITY—According to the Department of Health (DOH-6), infection of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) among health workers in Western Visayas region has now increased to 2,772.

“We should understand that they are high-risk to be infected,” explained Dr. Mary Jane Juanico, DOH-6’s chief for infectious disease section.

As of February 8, DOH-6 recorded 1,267 COVID-19 infections among medical workers. These are doctors, nurses, nursing attendants, and medical technologists in the region comprised of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental provinces as well as the highly urbanized cities of Iloilo and Bacolod.

The most number of COVID-19 infections were among nurses with 601 cases and followed by doctors with 231 cases.

“Of course, nurses and doctors will get infected because they deal with patients directly,” Juanico explained to Manila Bulletin.

DOH-6 also found 1,505 cases of COVID-19 among non-medical workers. These are ambulance drivers, barangay health workers as well as staff of hospitals or healthcare facilities.

Juanico also attributed the rising cases of COVID-19 among non-medical workers as returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and locally stranded individuals (LSIs) continue to come home.
