WHO'S NEXT? - Eddy Reynoso, Ryan Garcia's trainer, insists that he wants the 22-year-old American lightweight star to face WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis instead of Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao. (AFP)

If Eddy Reynoso has the final say, he would want Ryan Garcia to face Gervonta Davis instead of Manny Pacquiao.

Reynoso, the trainer of the undefeated American lightweight star, said a fight between Garcia and Davis is "far more interesting" and can "exceed expectations" given that both boxers brawl in the same weight.

“A fight between Ryan Garcia and Tank Davis can be the biggest fight in boxing,” Reynoso told boxingscene.com. “They are two of the biggest stars of this new generation. Manny Pacquiao is great but he’s part of a past generation.

"The young fans of Ryan Garcia and young fans of Gervonta Davis are going to want to see that fight.”

Reynoso said Garcia has been in constant consultation with him as well as adviser Guadalupe Valencia. The final decision, however, still depends on the Golden Boy Promotions founded by boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya.

Last month, De La Hoya has vowed to make the Pacquiao-Garcia bout happen before the end of 2021 or by early next year.

But as far as Reynoso is concerned, he doesn't want any of that for his young student.

"I really don’t like that fight,” the veteran trainer said. “Manny Pacquiao has all that experience, it’s a fight at a heavier weight against (a naturally) bigger fighter. But in my role as a teacher, my job is to prepare him for these fights that he and the team accept."

Before Garcia made a shock announcement on facing Pacquiao, the WBC interim lightweight champion was interested in taking on Davis first before the Filipino boxing icon.

Davis, the WBA lightweight and "super" junior lightweight titleholder, for his part, recently hurt his hand during a sparring session but the extent of his injury was not disclosed.
