NBI arrests woman in 'online scam sale' of gold jewelry

A woman has been arrested by operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) Special Action Unit (NBI-SAU) in Pasay City for alleged online scam involving gold jewelry.

The reported scammer was identified by NBI Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Director Eric B. Distor last Friday, Feb. 5, as Hanna Chris Gonzales Dadea. She was apprehended in an entrapment operation after the NBI teamed up with the complainant and a delivery service rider.

Dadea has been presented for inquest proceedings before the Office of Prosecutor of Pasay City, Distor said.

Distor said the NBI operation stemmed from a complaint filed against a certain “Marilou Efsor” for identity theft and estafa.

The complainant claimed that she was in business with “Marilou Zartiga Efsor” and they have been transacting with a certain “Marilou Efsor” in selling gold jewelry.

But the complainant alleged that they have been subjected to online rants and complaints after buyer-victims reportedly paid them for pieces of jewelry that they failed to deliver.

The complainant said she discovered a fake Facebook account under the name “Marilou Efsor,” who had been transacting with their customers and soliciting money for sales of gold jewelry through online banking.

Meanwhile, the complainant said, a certain “Maricel Mendoza,” under false pretenses, would communicate with business partners while  “Efsor” claimed that she had made deposits and would send edited screenshots of online deposits allegedly made.

Because of the scam, the complainant and the real Efsor would lose all their gold jewelry to “Mendoza” and the fake “Efsor.”

The NBI-SAU operatives then conducted an entrapment operation. The complainant was to give a set of jewelry and P4,000 to “Mendoza” through a delivery rider service. “Mendoza” falsely represented herself as the buyer when in truth, another person made the payment for the jewelry.

The delivery service rider agreed to help the NBI operatives and provided information regarding the person who booked the service and the drop-off location. 

It turned out that a certain “Marilou” booked the service and a person named “Chris” is the recipient.

Upon reaching the drop-off point at No.125 P. Manahan St., Pasay City, a female individual named “Chris,” later identified as Dadea, received the package. 

Dadea was apprehended and brought to the NBI-SAU office for proper booking procedures after being apprised of her constitutional rights.

Distor said several complainants have agreed to file complaints against Dadea for online scam. 

The NBI-SAU, on the other hand, will continue its investigation against the scam and look into other personalities such as Dadea's father, sister, boyfriend, and other individuals who might possibly be involved, he said.
