A dilapidated bridge in Manila will finally be reconstructed after 46 years, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Saturday, February 6.

Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark A. Villar said that the old Fajardo Bridge, built in 1975, will be demolished and replaced to make way for a better bridge that conforms to the latest DPWH standard specification and seismic design.
“We have here a 46-year-old bridge that has only undergone minor repairs in its superstructure. With the replacement project, Fajardo Bridge will be a much-sturdier bridge with an increased carrying and discharge capacity below,” the secretary said.
According to DPWH National Capital Region Director Eric A. Ayapana, the two-lane Fajardo Bridge located in Barangay 455 has only been one-lane passable since February 1 while the department conducted preparatory activities before the board piling works on the superstructure.
A temporary footbridge will also be constructed in anticipation of the reconstruction and full closure of the bridge.
At present, Fajardo Street is a one-way traffic street, hence various re-routing schemes will be implemented to prevent traffic build up while the bridge replacement project is under way.
