The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced that starting Feb. 20, voter registration will be conducted on Saturdays to encourage more registrants for the May 2022 elections.
“Ang registration simula Feb. 20 ay hanggang Sabado na. Pwede na kayong magparehistro ng hanggang Sabado mula alas 8 hanggang alas 5 at huwag natin sasayangin ang pagkakataon maging parte ng demokarasya (The registration will be until Saturdays, starting Feb. 20 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. We should not waste the opportunity to be part democracy),” said Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez in an interview over radio DZMM.
Jimenez said that the number of people who registered so far is still low.
“Four million ang expected and nasa 1.3 million palang tayo, masyadong malayo (We are expecting four million [new registrants] but so far, only 1.3 million people have registered),” he said.
Jimenez said that additional compensation will be given to Comelec employees who will be on duty on Saturdays.
“Nag authorize na yung aming Commission en banc na magbigay ng konting overtime para doon sa mga personnel natin para ma-compensate naman yung kanilang panahon (Our Commission en banc has authorized to provide an overtime pay for our personnel [who will report for work on Saturdays] to compensate for their time),” he said.
“Palagi nating sinasabi na talagang kakailanganin ng ganitong klaseng sakripisyo on all sides kasi nga napakalayo ng agwat ng expectation natin versus what we actually have right now (We always say that we really need this kind of sacrifice on all sides because the gap between our expectation is very far versus what we actually have right now),” he added.
