259 Manila barangays to get P100k each for staying COVID-free for 2 months
A total of 259 barangays in the City of Manila will each receive a cash reward of P100,000 for staying coronavirus disease (COVID-19)-free for two months.
The number includes 32 barangays which hurdled the city government's challenge for the second time. The first was when they did not register any new infections from September 1 to October 31. Their total cash reward is P200,000 each.
In November, 2020, Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso challenged barangays to remain free of COVID-19 from December 1, 2020 to January 31, 2021 to receive a reward of P100,000.
He issued the same challenge for the period of September 1 to October 31, which 73 barangays were able to meet.
The Manila mayor made the challenge in a bid to empower barangays to help the local government unit in battling the deadly disease.
The data provided by barangays has been validated by the Manila Health Department.
Domagoso had earlier said there may be a third challenge if he finds enough funds for it
"Hindi naman binubulsa ni chairman 'yan, eh. Gagamitin ni chairman at kagawad panggastos sa mga barangay (The barangay chairmen do not pocket the money. They use it for the barangays)," he told reporters.
"It's just a way of sharing the resources of the government," he added.
