LP's presidential bet to be tackled at 'proper time,' says Leni camp

Supporters and partymates of Vice President Leni Robredo pushing for her presidential bid in the May 2022 polls will have to wait a little bit more.

Following the pronouncement of Senator Francis Pangilinan that Robredo is among the Liberal Party’s choices, Robredo’s spokesperson Barry Gutierrez said on Thursday it is not yet her primary focus as of the moment.

Pangilinan is the LP president while Robredo serves as the party’s chairperson.

“VP Leni is currently focused on working to help our fellow Filipinos overcome the challenges of the pandemic and the long quarantine,” Gutierrez said in a statement.

“This is the need of the moment and her priority right now. Everything else will be addressed at the proper time,” he added.

True enough, Robredo was in Bulacan providing livelihood assistance to various sectors that would help them get past the COVID-19 crisis.

Robredo's partymates and supporters are pushing for her candidacy for president next year.

But Pangilinan clarified that the LP hasn’t made its final decision on the matter because they are still busy with their COVID-19 response.

Pangilinan, however, noted that the vice president admitted that she hasn’t decided whether to run or not. “A lot of things can still happen. In the meantime, we just focus on how we can help address this pandemic and the economic crisis.”

For the senator, political issues “can wait” as the country is struggling economically because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Hopefully, if we are able to show a good performance then voters will remember that and will support us,” Pangilinan said in an online interview with reporters.

He added that the party is recruiting members in the grassroots and helping communities to survive the pandemic.
