The former top cop of Jolo, Sulu who was gunned down in Maguindanao last November was killed by at least one relative of the group of military intelligence operatives who were slain in the past by policemen in the province.
Gen. Debold Sinas, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said they have already filed a case of murder against seven people in connection with the death of Lt. Col. Walter Annayo, the chief of police of Jolo.
The town was where four military intelligence operatives led by Maj. Marvin Indammong were killed in June last year in front of a police station.
Sinas said that the murder case filed before the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor of Maguindanao last week were against Rasul Naharang Radja, alias Rasul Asula; Nara Kagatan Asula; and five other people who are yet to be identified.
“One of them was a relative of one of the soldiers who died in Jolo. Most likely, it was revenge against the former Jolo police chief,” said Sinas.
He was referring to Corporal Abdal Asula, the driver of the car which was flagged down by local policemen while tailing suspected female suicide bombers in Jolo. Aside from Indammong and Asula, Capt. Irwin Managuelod and Sgt. Jaime Velasco were also killed.
Annayo was shot dead by suspects on board a white Sports Utility Vehicle as he parked his car along the Narciso Ramos Highway in Sultan Mastura, Maguindanao to buy coconut water.
He was reassigned to the Personnel Holding and Accounting Unit of Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Parang, Maguindanao upon his relief as Chief of Police of Jolo after six of his subordinates were linked to the shooting incident that resulted in the death of the four soldiers.
The nine policemen who were tagged in the shooting were Senior Master Sgt. Abdelzhimar Padjiri, Master Sgt. Hanie Baddiri, Staff Sgt. Iskandar Susulan, Staff Sgt. Ernisar Sappal, Corporal Sulki Andaki , and Patrolman Moh. Nur Pasani, all members of the Jolo Municipal Police Station; and Staff Sgt. Almudzrin Hadjaruddin, Patralman Alkajal Mandangan, and Patrolman Rajiv Putalan of the Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit (PDEU) of Sulu.
They are already dismissed from the service and are now being convinced to surrender.
“This is actually one of the reasons why we want them to surrender. The threat on their lives is there and I think they know now that one of the motives behind the killing (of Annayo) is revenge,” said Sinas.
