Leni 2022 Movement launched by Robredo's supporters

If presidential daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio’s supporters have “Run, Sara, Run for President for 2022” campaign, sectoral leaders backing Vice President Leni Robredo have launched the “Leni 2022 movement.”

Robredo’s supporters and partymates at the opposition Liberal Party convened in Lucena City, Quezon on Monday.

Teddy Baguilat Jr., LP’s vice president for internal affairs, posted on Twitter three photos of a meeting held to launch the movement.

“Kilos na (Let’s move). Meeting of core group ng Quezon for LENI 2022 movement in Lucena City,” he wrote.

Among those in attendance is former House deputy speaker Erin Tanada, who is also the vice president for external affairs of the LP, the political party which Robredo heads as chairperson.

A former lawmaker, Baguilat is also the chair of the party’s National Organizing and Membership Committee.

They were joined by former Quezon 2nd District Rep. Irvin Alcala, Lucena City Councilor Sunshine Abcede, and sectoral leaders who are members of LP in Quezon province.

“It’s a core group. And initial meeting. Small gathering allowed. From a core of committed souls come a thousand volunteers and hopefully a movement,” Baguilat said in another tweet.

“LP in Quezon is at the core of the movement that includes other groups. I even asked we invite progressive groups as we share common issues on land rights and sovereignty. We agreed that while the basis of unity is a LENI presidency, it can also be based on a platform of issues,” he said.

Though long-touted to be the standard-bearer of the LP for the 2022 presidential elections, Robredo hasn’t made public her decision to run as president. Instead, previous reports pointed to her plans to run as governor of her home province of Camarines Sur.

The lady official, however, has not said anything definitive of her political plans for next year’s elections.

Last weekend, Duterte’s supporters were seen giving away calendars bearing the name and image of Sara “for President.” They again gathered Monday in front of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Manila, asking Mayor Duterte to run for the 2022 polls.
