President Duterte has resorted to "public shaming" of erring government officials out of exasperation with corruption in the bureaucracy, Malacañang said Monday.

Releasing the names of officials linked to alleged irregularities is part of the President's intensified anti-corruption drive in the remainder of his term, according to Presidential spokesman Harry Roque.

Roque made the remarks after the Philippines dropped two spots in the global corruption index for 2020. In the study made by Transparency International, the Philippines ranked 115th out of the 180 countries last year, from the 113th spot in 2019, after its anti-corruption efforts supposedly appeared stagnant.

"Well, alam po ninyo ang Presidente, talagang problemado din diyan, kasi nga parang walang katapusan itong problema ng korapsiyon (Well you know the President is troubled because there seems to be no end to the problem of corruption)," Roque said during a televised press briefing Monday.

"Ngayon po sinusubukang niya iyong public shaming, iyong pagbabasa ng mga pangalan, para magsilbing halimbawa sa iba na kung ikaw ay corrupt eh talagang mababasa ang pangalan mo diyan (Now, he has tried public shaming, the reading of names to serve as example to others that if you are corrupt, your name will be mentioned)," he added.

In recent public addresses, the President began reading aloud the list of government officials, including barangay officials, either suspended or dismissed for various offenses. Some government personnel identified by the President came from different state offices such as customs, immigration, public works, and state health insurance firm.

Apart from the President's housecleaning efforts, Roque cited the work of Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA), Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Office of the Ombudsman in the fight against corruption in government.

"Alam ng Presidente may problema pa at kaya nga sinabi-sabi niya na igugugol niya iyong dalawang taong natira niya, isa at kalahati na lang po, isa at kalahating na panahon na natitira sa kaniyang termino para lutasin itong problema ng korapsiyon (The President knows there is a problem and he has said he will use the remaining one and a half year in office to resolve the problem of corruption)," he said.

"Tingnan po natin ang mga susunod na mga pangyayari (Let's see what will happen next)," he added.

President Duterte, who initially promised to solve the problems of illegal drugs and corruption, will end his six-year term in June, 2022.
