DAVAO CITY - Members of the Philippine National Police (PNP)-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) have joined a two-day learning session on the settling of “rido” or family feuds.
In a statement on Friday, January 29, the BARMM Ministry of Public Order and Safety (MPOS) said it conducted a learning session for the PNP-BARMM personnel in Cotabato City on January 27 and 28 "to further strengthen the security sector’s understanding on the complexity of settling ‘rido’ or clan feuds in the Bangsamoro region".
“Our commitment towards a peaceful, orderly, and safe BARMM, is probably the same with yours as (a) law enforcement workforce, with utmost responsibility to maintain and protect peace and order situation in BARMM, and the Philippines,” said MPOS Minister Hussein P. Muñoz.
Officer-in-Charge of Regional Community Affairs and Development Division (RCADD) Lt. Col. Romel A. Naciongayo said the PNP was "committed to help prevent and resolve rido in order to achieve peace and order in the BARMM community."
“Ang problema ng rido ay hindi dapat natin isantabi bagkus kailangan nating makilahok sa anumang gawain upang wakasan ang rido at magkaroon ng matiwasay at mapayapang lipunan,” said Naciongayo.
(The problem about rido should not be ignored, and should instead be given importance with us being involved in whatever activity that will lead to the resolution of rido, so that there would be a peaceful and orderly society)
The participants came from various units and divisions of the PNP-BARMM in Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, including Cotabato City.
Muñoz said MPOS has recorded 442 cases of rido across the region. However, he added that the number "may potentially increase as they proceed with rido mapping and profiling this year."
To date, the MPOS has resolved 49 out of the 442 rido cases. These cases include 32 from Lanao del Sur, 10 from Maguindanao, and seven cases from the special geographical area in the 63 barangays in North Cotabato.
The Bangsamoro government said the ministry has already conducted various training, including alternative dispute resolution, forum on the role of women in rido settlement, data gathering, and community-based training in Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao and in the 63 barangays in North Cotabato.
Currently, the Bangsamoro government has trained 1,220 local mediators in settling conflict and rido.
