DSWD awards MB reporter with 'Gawad Ulat'

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Friday recognized Manila Bulletin reporter Charissa Luci-Atienza for her contribution in disseminating information about the initiatives undertaken by the agency.

In a virtual ceremony, DSWD awarded Luci-Atienza as the “Most Supportive DSWD Beat Reporter” in the “Gawad Ulat” Awards. She was recognized for “having written the most number of positive and balanced stories” on the programs, projects and services of the DSWD.

As part of the 70th founding anniversary of the DSWD, the department has institutionalized the “Gawad Ulat” Awards to give recognition to the Most Supportive DSWD Beat Reporter, Most Supportive Newspaper, Most Supportive Radio Station, Most Supportive Television Station, and Most Supportive Online News Site.

Anchored on this year’s theme, “DSWD@70: Kabalikat ng Mahihirap sa Panahon ng Pandemya,” the “Gawad Ulat” is part of the PaNata ko sa Bayan or the “Pagkilala sa Natatanging Kontribusyon sa Bayan” Awards which acknowledges the “efforts of individuals groups or organizations whose ‘panata’ or vow is to share their resources and time in providing a better opportunity for the disadvantaged sectors.”

Luci-Atienza, a Bachelor of Arts Major in Mass Communication graduate from Lyceum of the Philippines University, started in Manila Bulletin in February 2004. She has been covering DSWD since January, 2020.

Upon receiving the award, Luci-Atienza also underscored the importance of media service especially during the pandemic. “We as harbingers of truth play a significant role in helping out the government, or any sectors trumpet out their programs,  advocacies, and projects that would help alleviate the plight of those who are in the fringes of society,” she said.

For Charissa, covering the DSWD beat at this time of pandemic is very challenging considering the restrictions “but the calling to serve in the spirit of genuine service prevails over these challenges.” She also thanked DSWD Secretary Rolando Bautista and the DSWD family for recognizing her efforts. 

In 2019, Charissa bagged the Second Prize at the Jose G. Burgos Jr. Awards for Biotechnology Journalism by the Joe Burgos Pen Inc. She is also among the DOST-Coursera Scholarship Top Performers earning 45 certificates.
