Injured young PH serpent eagle rescued in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY—The Western Visayas regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-6) lauded a family in this city for rescuing a young eagle that was injured.

“I am grateful for the environmentally-responsible citizens for their continuous support in the protection and conservation of our species,” said DENR-6 Regional Director Francisco Milla Jr.

The Perocho family from Arevalo district did not hesitate to call DENR after finding an Philippine serpent eagle at their backyard recently. The young eagle with the scientific name of Spilornis holospilus was limping with a wound on its right leg.

DENR staff in Iloilo City then transferred the injured eagle to the DENR’s Community Environment Office in Miag-ao town before it was released back to the wild.

The Philippine serpent eagle is endemic in the country and is in the list of concerned eagle species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN Red List) and BirdLife International.

“The effort is precious as it allows us to see eagles and other birds fly and soar high in the sky,” added Milla.
