Baptist university in Iloilo decries red-tagging

ILOILO CITY—The administration of Central Philippine University (CPU) here has slammed its inclusion as one of the educational institutions in Western Visayas region where the left-wing Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing New People’s Army (NPA) have allegedly recruited their members.

“The University does not and has never condoned activities, which promote armed resistance the government,” said CPU President Dr. Teodoro Robles in a statement released Wednesday, January 27.

“As a responsible Christian institution of higher education, we mold our students to become active participants in nation-building.  We breed in them the burning desire to uphold democracy and advance social justice.  We instill in them respect and support for the government,” Robles said.

“As a Baptist institution of higher learning, CPU will always advocate for independence and democracy built on the foundation of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace,” Robles added.

Aside from CPU, five other universities in Western Visayas were included in the list of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF ELCAC).

These were University of the Philippines (UP Visayas),  West Visayas State University (WVSU), Capiz State University (CAPSU), Filamer Christian University (FCU), and Akan State University (ASU).
