2020 was third warmest in past 60 years, says PAGASA

The year 2020 was officially ranked as the third warmest year ever recorded for the Philippines in almost 60 years, according to the latest analysis of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Speaking during the PAGASA's climate outlook forum held on Wednesday, weather specialist Ger Anne Marie Duran reported that 2020 ranked third as the warmest year having a mean temperature anomaly of 0.4 degrees Celsius based on the annual mean temperature anomalies from 1961 to 2020.

According to PAGASA, 2016 ranked as the second warmest year since 1950 and tied with 2010 having a mean temperature anomaly of 0.6 degrees Celsius.

The year 1998 remained as the hottest year since 1950 with a 0.8 degrees Celsius temperature anomaly.

In 2020, most parts of the country experienced above average mean temperature for the year based on the annual mean temperature anomaly, Duran said.

The air temperature recorded at the Isabela State University in Echague, Isabela on May 11, 2020 was the highest recorded in 2020 at 41.2 degrees Celsius.

However, it was slightly lower than the all-time high 42.2 degrees Celsius air temperature registered in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan on May 11, 1969.

In 2020, the highest heat index, or what the temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity is combined with the air temperature, was recorded at 58.0 degrees Celsius (indicates extreme danger) on April 20 in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro.

Duran said "majority of the country experienced 40 to 50 degrees Celsius heat index" in 2020.

We experienced warm daytime temperature but warmer nighttime temperature, she added.

The country's third hottest year on record is a reflection of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's declaration that 2020 is the second warmest year on record globally.

NOAA also reported that the world’s seven-warmest years have all occurred since 2014, with 10 of the warmest years occurring since 2005.
