Metro Manila Council to meet Tuesday over NCR's quarantine status

Paranaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez said the Metro Manila Council (MMC) will meet Tuesday (January 26) to determine whether Metro Manila is ready to be placed under Modified General Community Quarantine (MGCQ).

Olivarez, chairman of MMC told GMA News the number of active coronavirus cases should significantly decrease before placing Metro Manila under a more relaxed quarantine status.

"Isa po 'yan sa pag-uusapan po natin sa meeting by tomorrow night. Titingnan po natin 'yung ating UK variant na ito if it will affect our metropolis at kung ano 'yung mga prevention natin na gagawin bago tayo mag-MGCQ (That is one of our agenda when the MMC meets tomorrow night. We will look at the new UK variant and if it will affect the metropolis and discuss preventive measures before we will enter into MGCQ)," Olivarez said.

Metro Manila is currently under General Community Quarantine (GCQ) until January 31.

The council's recommendation on the easing of age restrictions in areas under MGCQ is also in the mayors’ agenda.

"Halos lahat po kami, hindi po sumasang-ayon in relaxing this age bracket... Despite of that, humingi pa rin po kami ng recommendation, comment, advice ng ating medical expert katulad ng pediatrics, tinatawag na mga consultant at doon po sa kanilang ibinigay di po talaga advisable na ibaba po 'yung ating age bracket (Almost all the mayors are not in favor of relaxing the restrictions in this age bracket (children aged 10 up to 65). We asked for recommendations, comment, advise from medical experts like pediatricians and they, too are against the easing of age restrictions)," he said.

The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) earlier allowed children age 10 and adults until the age of 65 in areas under MGCQ to go out of their homes starting February 1.
