UP oval temporarily closed to the public

The 2.2-kilometer academic oval of the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman, Quezon City will be off limits to the public starting January 23 to February 5, 2021 due to health and safety concerns.

"We know that you've heard COVID-19 has variants now. And lately, the number of cases infected with the virus has gone up again," UP said in an advisory.

Following the closure of the academic oval, the UP Diliman College of Science will also close the College of Science Amphitheater and the National Science Complex grounds to the public starting Saturday (Jan. 23).

The UP oval is a popular spot for joggers and cyclists. 

After months of closure, the university reopened the academic oval to the public on November 7 for "de-stressing activities or usual exercises" like walking, jogging, running, yoga, stretching, and tai-chi from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Protocols include wearing of face mask and face shield. Visitors must also bring their own disinfecting alcohol and exercising equipment. 

A 10-person limit is also being implemented on the campus. Social distancing of at least six feet must be practiced even when running. 

Eating and social gatherings, such as picnics, are also strictly prohibited in the oval. Persons under 15 years old and over 65 are likewise not allowed to enter the area.
