Minimum wage of workers, including Filipinos, in Taiwan increased – POEA

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has announced that workers in Taiwan, including Filipino workers, will receive an increase in their monthly minimum wage starting this month.

Citing the Ministry of Labor of Taiwan, POEA said that its Cabinet has approved the increase of the minimum salary from NT$23,800 to NT$24,000 (about P40,000) monthly minimum wage and an hourly salary of NT$160 (about P275) from NT$158.

“The said basic wage legislation is aimed at safeguarding the basic life of the workers and their families in maintaining their necessary purchasing power,” POEA said.

POEA explained that all institutions in Taiwan “were directed to comply with the adjusted monthly minimum wage” amount starting January 2021 and that “all workers” must be paid with not less than NT$24,000 per month.

“Also, workers who are paid on an hourly basis shall receive a salary of not less than NT$160 per hour, as well as for workers who are paid daily, which is to be multiplied to the amount of their working hours within the statutory working hours,” POEA said.

POEA noted that the new minimum wage shall be also used as the basis in calculating the overtime pay of the workers.

“According to the Ministry of Labor, the increase will benefit some 1,500,000 workers including 470,000 foreign workers, 150,000 of which are Filipinos,” the POEA said.
