Comelec calls on eligible voters to register for 2022 elections

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has so far received more than 1 million applications for voter registration for the May 2022 national and local polls.

Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez said that as of January 7, 2020, the total number of applications received is at 1,050,793.

He said the poll body expects 4 million registrants and 1 million reactivations.

Jimenez earlier urged qualified voters to register.

"We still have a long way to go. #MagparehistroKa #DontSitThisOneOut," he said in his Twitter account.

Voter registration for the May, 2022 polls resumed last September 1 except in areas under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) or Modified ECQ.

Qualified to register are those who will be at least 18 years of age on or before Election Day, or on May 9, 2022; a resident in the Philippines for at least 1 year; and resides in the place where he or she intends to vote for at least 6 months on or before Election Day.

All local Offices of the Election Officer (OEOs) are open from Mondays to Thursdays, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., to accept applicants for voter registration.

Those set to visit local poll offices are reminded to adhere to the existing health protocols, such as wearing face masks and face sheilds, and observing physical distancing.

The voter registration period will run until September 30, 2021.
