CEBU CITY – A municipal councilor and his brother were among those arrested for alleged illegal cockfighting in a raid conducted by the police in Tuburan town, northern Cebu.
Tuburan councilor Arbello Dela Cerna and his brother lawyer Renan Dela Cerna were among the nine persons arrested by the police in Barangay Putat at around 5 p.m., Saturday, January 16.
Tuburan Police Chief Lt. Col. Rolando Barraquio said there were at least 200 persons, who took part in illegal cockfight, locally known as “tigbakay”.
“The other participants were able to run. The cockfight was ongoing when the raiding team arrived,” said Barraquio.
Barraquio said it was the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG)-Cebu Province which did the monitoring of the illegal gambling activity.
It was learned that cockfights were held in the area regularly.
“It was not the first time that a cockfight was held in the area. The Tuburan police assisted the CIDG when it was confirmed that cockfights have been going on in the area,” Barraquio said.
The Dela Serna brothers and the seven others who were arrested will be charged for violating the anti-gambling law and the health protocols set out by the Inter-Agency Task Force meant to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
“They really violated the prohibition on mass gathering because there were at least 200 persons in that area,” said Barraquio.
Police said Renan may also face a separate charge after he was caught with a registered 9mm caliber pistol, but failed to present the necessary documents authorizing him to carry a firearm.
