Weekend weather: Cloudy skies, rains forecast

Cloudy skies with chances of rain will prevail over Luzon and parts of Visayas this weekend due to the tail-end of a frontal system and the northeast monsoon that continue to affect the country.

Weather specialist Ezra Bulquerin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Saturday that the tail-end of a frontal system or "shear line" will affect the eastern section of Southern Luzon.

Bulquerin said the weather system will bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over the Bicol region and Samar provinces which could lead to possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to heavy rains.

According to PAGASA, the tail-end of a frontal system is the boundary of two air masses with high temperature differences where thick clouds form causing rains with thunderstorms on its path.

In Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains will be experienced caused by the prevailing northeast monsoon or "amihan."

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers are expected over the rest of the country due to localized thunderstorms, PAGASA added.

The State weather bureau noted that strong to gale force winds associated with the surge of the northeast monsoon will be experienced over the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon.

A gale warning was raised over the northern and eastern coasts of Polillo Islands, Camarines Norte, northern and eastern coasts of Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes as a result.

Sea travel remains risky, especially for small sea craft, over seaboards where a gale warning was raised due to moderate to rough sea conditions and wave height of up to 3.7 meters, PAGASA warned.
