Magnitude 4.8 quake rocks Calatagan


The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has upgraded to magnitude 4.8 the earthquake that hit Calatagan town in Batangas on Saturday morning.

In the latest earthquake information bulletin of Phivolcs, it said that the quake struck five kilometers northwest of the municipality of Calatagan at 6:48 a.m.

The tremor had a depth of 153 kilometers and was tectonic in origin, meaning it was caused by ground shaking primarily due to the sudden movement in the Earth's plates, Phivolcs said.

According to Phivolcs, Instrumental Intensity I was recorded in Calatagan town in nearby areas including Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro, and in Plaridel, Bulacan.

No damage, as well as aftershocks, are expected from the earthquake, Phivolcs added.
