Travel ban on UAE likely due to detection of new COVID-19 strain
Malacañang said that the will probably expand the country's ongoing travel ban to include the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following the detection of the United Kingdom (UK) variant of COVID-19 in a Filipino that arrived in the Philipines from the Arab nation.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque made the statement after the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed that the new and more contagious COVID-19 strain has finally entered the country.
The UK variant has been detected after samples from a Filipino who returned home from the UAE on January 7 yielded positive genome sequencing results.
In his Thursday presser, Roque said that with the latest development, the Philippines will most likely include the UAE in the temporary travel ban.
"That will be upon the joint recommendation of the DOH (Department of Health) and the DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs). Because of this discovery, chances are, yes, there will be travel restrictions imposed on the UAE," he said.
"Antayin na lang po natin ang pormal na desisyon ng ating Presidente (Let's just wait for the decision of the President) which will be forthcoming very soon," he added.
So far, 33 countries are included in the country's travel ban which was imposed late-December last year to prevent the entry of the UK variant of COVID-19.
The said travel ban, which will end on Friday, January 15, is subject to an extension following the approval of the Inter-agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases. The IATF has a meeting set on Thursday, January 14, and number one on the agenda is the possible extension and expansion of the travel ban.
Meanwhile, Roque asked foreigners to postpone their travel to the Philippines.
Late addition
Roque explained that the UAE was not included in the travel ban because there were no reports of the UK variant there.
"Kasi hindi lang po tayo nagre-rely sa media report. Kailangan meron na po talagang confirmation po 'yan from international agencies, kasama na po diyan ang WHO (We don't just rely on media reports. We need to have confirmation from international agencies, including the World Health Organization)," he said.
