Duterte: Presidency not for women

As he dismissed rumors of him seeking a term extension, President Duterte said he told his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to not run for president as this was no a job a woman can handle.

Duterte made the statement as he rejected rumors that he is seeking to extend his term as pro-Duterte lawmakers propose amendments to the 1987 Constitution. 

In a speech in Quezon City, his first public event this year, President Duterte addressed the call of his supporters for his daughter to inherit his seat in Malacañang.

"My daughter, inuudyok naman nila (they're trying to get her to run). Sabi ko (I said): My daughter is not running," he said.

According to the President, he told Duterte-Carpio to not run for the presidency because he does not want her to experience what he went through.

He also said he does not think a woman can handle the job of being president.

"I have told Inday not to run kasi naaawa ako sa dadaanan niya na dinaanan ko (because I will feel bad for her as she will have to go through what I am going through)," Duterte said.

"Hindi ito pambabae. Alam mo (This is not a job for women. You know), the emotional setup of a woman and a man is totally different," he added.

The Philippines only had two female presidents so far.

The first was Corazon Aquino who got the seat in 1986 after the EDSA People Power Revolution that toppled the Marcos dictatorship.

The second is Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who became president in 2001 following the EDSA People Power II that ousted Joseph Estrada.

This was not the first time Sara Duterte-Carpio's name was floated as one of the possible candidates for the 2022 presidential race.

In September last year, Chief presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo confessed that he wants President Duterte to run for vice president in the 2022 polls if the latter's daughter would run for the presidency.

The same situation happened in Davao City when Duterte and his daughter served as the vice mayor and mayor of their hometown, respectively, from 2010 to 2013.
