'A Thousand Cuts' wins Best Documentary at 30th Gotham Awards

Award-winning documentary “A Thousand Cuts” won Best Documentary in this year’s 30^th Gotham Awards.

The documentary, directed by Ramona Diaz, tied with Garret Bradley’s “Time” for first place.

It bested other nominees including “76 Days” by Hao Wu and Weixi Chen, “City Hall” by Frederick Wiseman, and “Out Time Machine” by Yang Sun and S. Leo Chiang.

“A Thousand Cuts” tackles press freedom under threat in the Philippines. It follows renowned journalist Maria Ressa and the escalating war between the government and the press.

Earlier, the documentary won the Global Impact Award in the 36^th Los Angeles Asian Pacific Awards, and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and San Francisco International Film Festival among others.

The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) Gotham Awards advocates the future of storytelling by connecting artists with essential resources at all stages of development and distribution and represents a network of 10,000 storytellers with 350 new feature and documentary works each year, according to its website.
