Mayor Belmonte asks QC residents who attended Black Nazarene feast to undergo COVID-19 testing

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has called on her constituents who attended the celebration of the feast of the Black Nazarene to undergo free coronavirus disease (COVID-19) testing.

“As a precautionary measure, we encourage our residents who attended the celebration to have themselves immediately checked for COVID-19 in our testing centers for free,” Belmonte said Wednesday in a statement.

The mayor issued her call after thousands of devotees flocked to Quiapo Church and other Manila churches last week to hear mass.

“Hindi natin puwedeng isantabi ang posibilidad na nagkahawahan dahil sa dami ng dumalo. Mabuti nang makasiguro upang hindi natin mahawa ang ating pamilya at mga kasama natin sa komunidad (We cannot set aside the possibility that some get infected due to the crowd who attended. It’s better that we are sure that we will not infect our family and other members of our community),” she said.

Belmonte earlier asked the Manila Police District (MPD) for a list of Quezon City residents who signed the health the declaration forms, so the local government could endorse them to their respective barangays for monitoring.

Dr. Rolly Cruz, the head of the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU), advised those who are now showing COVID-19 symptoms, such as flu and cough, to coordinate with their barangays. 

“The barangays then will refer them to the nearest testing sites and health centers where they can undergo free COVID-19 testing,” he said.
