Lacson urges fellow lawmakers to keep performing oversight function

The 24-member Senate must keep going in performing its oversight function as its collective responsibility to the people of the Philippines.
 
Senator Panfilo M. Lacson, chairman of the Senate national defense and security committee, issued the statement following the filing by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) of charges against officials of Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) arising from alleged multi-billion-peso cases of corruption in that state agency.

‘’Modesty aside, most of the pieces of evidence used by the NBI were culled from the materials that we submitted to the Department of Justice (DOJ),’’ Lacson said, referring to the public hearings by the Senate constituted as a Committee of the Whole (COW).
 
‘’We can only hope that this case reaches its logical conclusion to make all those who, without a shred of conscience in their bones, took advantage of a deadly virus to fleece government of funds intended to respond to an unprecedented health crisis that we continue to grapple with,’’ he stressed.
 
‘’That said, there is more reason that we should trust DOJ Secretary Menardo Guevarra and his people at the DOJ and NBI,’’ he added.
