DPWH to create regional project office in BARMM

A regional project management office that will handle the implementation of all national infrastructure projects in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is set to be created, the Department of Public Works and Highways said today.

Following the approval of the creation of the regional unit, officials from the department and BARMM Ministry of Public Works met recently to discuss the establishment of the office that will be key to the implementation of road and bridge projects  in the region.

"The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) have started to synchronize infrastructure development plans and programs to finally make the change for the living condition of the Bangsamoro people happen," Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar said in a statement.

"The first consultation meeting between DPWH and MPW BARMM paved the way for a better understanding on the implementation of both national and local infrastructure in BARMM," Villar added.

Once the office is activated and the hiring of personnel is completed, the regional project management office will handle the direct implementation of all DPWH national infrastructure projects for BARMM funded by the General Appropriations Act (GAA).

Aside from the establishment of the regional office, the conduct of road condition and traffic count survey on BARMM national roads and its integration to the road network system database, and the maintenance of national roads in the region were also discussed.

The department said it will begin its program to strengthen connectivity between areas in BARMM and other regions of Mindanao by developing and upgrading 176.60 kilometers of primary and its access roads under the P12.86 Billion Road Network Development Project in Conflict-Affected Areas in Mindanao funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).  

With completed detailed design study from the technical support provided by the JICA, the DPWH is looking "to start soonest" the construction and  improvement of 13.9 kilometers Matanog-Barira-Alamada-Libungan Road and 63 kilometers Tapian-Lebak Coastal Road.  

It was also disclosed that other contract packages are still under way for detailed design.

These include the detailed design works for three long span bridges in Tawi Tawi Province, the feasibility studies of coastal road projects and an iconic bridge for the Provinces of Sulu and Basilan, and the 60-km transcentral roads for Marawi City, Lanao del Sur.
