The government and its private partners have so far extended more than P1.5 million worth of assistance to families affected by a weather disturbance in Bicol Region and Western Visayas.
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said more than 4,000 families have sought refuge in evacuation centers while over a thousand people were rescued in flood areas.
"The government continues to provide assistance to families affected by the flooding incidents brought by the tail-end of a frontal system experienced in Region V and Region VI," he said.
"A total of P1,584,850.00 worth of assistance has been provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, local government units and private partners to affected families, as of January 7," he added.
Citing information from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Roque said around 4,207 families are taking shelter at the evacuation centers in Negros Occidental while nine families are staying in Camarines Sur evacuation centers.
As of Jan. 9, Roque said 1,100 residents have been rescued in flooded barangays in Talisay City and Victorias City in Negros Occidental by concerned state agencies.
Among the agencies involved in the rescue and relief operations are Philippine Coast Guard, PCG Auxiliary, Philippine Army, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police, Philippine Red Cross, Department of Education, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and the Local Government.
Moderate to heavy rains fell on some parts of Bicol region and Western Visayas due to the tail-end of a frontal system over the weekend. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned residents in these areas to remain alert for floods and landslides due to the latest weather disturbance.
