The University of the East (UE) Manila on Tuesday announced that it will be closing down its Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) program at the end of school year 2020-2021.

In a letter addressed to Dr. Florante A. Magnaye, dean of the College of Engineering Manila, dated December 16, 2020, President and Chief Academic Officer Ester A. Garcia said the UE Board of Trustees approved and confirmed the recommendation of the university president for the closure of the program.

Official university publication UE Dawn reported that the drop in enrollment for the past six semesters intensified by the pandemic has forced the university to shut down the program.

Among the reasons cited also by the UE administration are the passing rate in ECE boards for the last 10 years consistently yielding a percentage below national passing rate and the demand for appropriation of money for new tools and equipment for the program as its building was gutted by the fire in 2016.
