2 containers of ukay-ukay worth P7.8M from China seized

Instead of tissue, a bulk of used clothes or “ukay-ukay” worth P7.853 million were found in two containers during the holidays at the Port of Manila, the Bureau of Customs said Monday.

The shipment, which came from China, was declared to contain tissue but physical examination conducted on December 29, 2020 revealed that the shipment contained ukay-ukay.

According to Port of Manila District Collector Michael Angelo Vargas, the shipment was consigned to a certain MGGF International Trading Corp. “It entered the country during the Christmas holidays from China and was declared as tissue,” he said.

“Examination of the container however revealed that it actually contained used clothes estimated to have a value of P7.853 million,” Vargas added.

The shipment was seized for violation of Section 1400 in relation to Section 1113 of the RA 10863 also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA).

The district collector also said that the revocation of the importer's accreditation is also being processed.

“The Port of Manila will not allow the entry of illegal and smuggled goods into the country,” Vargas said.
