Mother, 3 children killed in Cebu City road mishap


CEBU CITY—Four family members were killed after the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a dump truck in Barangay Busay here on Sunday afternoon.

Killed in the vehicular accident were Alona Salon, 47, and her children Jason, 23; Erica, 16; and Jay Salon, 12.  

The motorcycle was driven by Jason, police said.

The accident happened in a downhill portion of a road in Sitio Lower Busay.

Police said the motorcycle bearing the Salon family and a dump truck driven by Whelmir Embudo, 40, were traveling in the same direction when the accident occurred past 5 p.m.

Embudo told the police that the brakes of the dump truck malfunctioned that caused him to hit the motorcycle from behind.

The truck run over the victims after they got thrown off the motorcycle because of the impact.

The truck only stopped when it collided with an elf truck on the opposite lane.

Jay died on the spot while the three other victims died while being treated at the hospital.

In an interview with radio station dyHP, Ernesto Salon, Alona’s husband, said the victims came from a resort in Barangay Babag, Cebu City and were already heading home when they met the accident.

Embudo, who surrendered to the police after the accident, is facing charges for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, serious physical injury and damage to property.
