DepEd streamlines professional dev't for teachers

As part of its efforts to link and streamline professional development of teachers with their career progression, the Department of Education (DepEd) is providing wider access to National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP) programs and courses.

“We are going to change the content of the program of NEAP because if we want to transform the quality of learners, we have to transform NEAP,” Education Secretary Leonor Briones said. “If we want to teach the learners new things, then the teachers will have to be the first to learn new manner of teaching,” she added.

 Consistent with its commitment to provide quality in-service development, DepEd said it will provide public school teachers and leaders a broad range of professional development programs and courses recognized by the NEAP programs and courses.

“To make learning real and to understand it better, relate it to the real world and to the things that learners are interested in,” Briones explained.

 As stated in DepEd Memorandum No. 082, Series of 2020, or the Guidelines on the Registration of Teachers and School Leaders for NEAP-Recognized Professional Development Programs and Courses, DepEd has established requirements and processes for enrolment to programs and courses offered by NEAP, other DepEd offices and units, and non-DepEd entities.

To be qualified for the NEAP programs and courses, DepEd said public school teachers and leaders must be holding a permanent item; have no pending administrative, civil, or criminal cases; and have not been found guilty of any violations.

The participants must be willing to sign and commit to the provisions of the NEAP-recognized Professional Development Contract and willing to prepare and undertake the conduct of a NEAP-PDP Action Plan.

“The public school teachers and leaders shall submit their intention to register in a NEAP-recognized professional development program or course to the School Division Office (SDO),” DepEd said. “The application will be subject to SDO's approval,” it added.

DepEd said that the Regional Offices will endorse the list of registered participants prepared by the SDO to the Central Office and NEAP, which will then approve and forward the list to the implementing DepEd unit or Learning Service Provider.

“Once the participant completed the program, NEAP will provide them the certificates that indicated the total Professional Development (PD) credit units earned during the session,” DepEd added.
