100 percent drop in firecracker-related injuries recorded in Central Visayas
CEBU CITY—The number of firecrackers-related injuries during the Christmas Day and New Year revelries in Central Visayas dropped by more than 100 percent.
The Department of Health-Central Visayas (DOH-7) reported that, from December 16, 2020 to 11:59 a.m. of January 1, 2021, there were only 17 cases of firecrackers-related injuries.
The cases were 111 percent lower compared to the same period in 2019 when there were 38 casualties.
Most of the cases on December 16, 2020 to January 1, 2021 happened in Lapu-Lapu City with six.
The various Disease Reporting Units of DOH-7 recorded three firecrackers-related injuries in Cebu City, another three in Bohol province, and two each in Cebu province and Mandaue City.
There was only one firecracker-related injury in Negros Orienta when an 11-year-old boy in Sta. Catalina town was injured after he was hit in the abdomen by a stray bullet.
The boy was brought to the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital for treatment, the DOH 7 said.
Siquijor did not record a single incident involving the use of firecrackers.
The DOH 7 said 45 percent of the cases involved hand injuries and most of the incidents occurred in streets with 11.
The incidents involved illegal firecrackers such as picollo, candy bomb, bongalo, triangle, araw, bombshell and libintador.
