The public has been urged to take up a new online course of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) available on the TESDA Online Program.
Entitled "Performing Proper Waste Management in the Workplace,” the free, self-paced course is composed of two units covering the concepts and practices of ecological solid waste management.
The online course was developed by TESDA in cooperation with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC).
Recently, the NSWMC approved and adopted the online module by virtue of Resolution No. 1424, Series of 2020, signed by DENR Undersecretary and Alternate to the Chairman of NSWMC, Benny Antiporda.
In response, the TESDA chief, Secretary Isidro Lapeña, presented last Dec. 21 a Certificate of Appreciation to the NSWMC, virtually received by Antiporda.
Earlier in June, Lapeña issued Memorandum No. 242, Series of 2020, (Delivery of the eLearning Course on Practicing Solid Waste Management in the Workplace), citing the Republic Act 9003, otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, as basis for the development of this course.
It intends to enhance the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the learners on the proper classification, segregation, minimization, and disposal of solid wastes.
The course also discusses salient features of the Philippine Environmental Laws and Regulations, as well as Waste Management Strategy and Planning to reduce the environmental impact of solid wastes.
RA 9003 declares the policy of the State in adopting a systematic, comprehensive, and ecological solid waste management program to ensure the protection of public health, environment, and the proper segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment, and disposal of solid waste through the formulation and adoption of best environmental practices.
A Certificate of Completion can be downloaded by completers who get at least 80 percent in the summative test at the end of the course.
Aside from this latest online course, TESDA has also promulgated the Training Regulations for Garbage Collection NC I and Sanitary Landfill Operation NC II to promote the observance and practice of solid waste management in the communities.
Various free online courses are also available on the TOP via www.e-tesda.gov.ph or through the TESDA app (downloadable from Google Play and Apple Store).
