Heavy rains cause landslides, flooding in Sorsogon

CAMP OLA, Albay – Heavy rainfall have caused landslides and flooding in Sorsogon province, resulting in roads being rendered impassable in several areas, the Police Regional Office 5 (PRO-5) reported Friday morning.

In a situational report, PRO-5 Spokesperson Maj. Malu Calubaquib said that landslides were recorded in Sitio Tiris, Barangay Osiao, Bacon District in Sorsogon City; Sitio Lay-a, Barangay Gate in Bulan town; Barangay Union in Gubat town; and in Barangay Jibong, Barcelona town.

Major roads in Barangay Gate and in Barangay Jibong remain unpassable to any kind of vehicle, but roads in Barangays Osiao and Union were already cleared after barangay officials were able to remove the eroded soil from a cliff.

No casualty was caused by the landslide incidents, she said.

Calubaquib added that there were 13 areas in Sorsogon province, which were submerged in floodwater because of the heavy rains.

There were 230 search and rescue (SAR) personnel, who have already been deployed to monitor incidents caused by the tail end of the cold front.

Meanwhile, the municipal government of Sto. Domingo in Albay province has already issued an advisory to avoid for fishermen against venturing out to sea.

Mayor Jun Aguas also cautioned residents against crossing rivers and waterways in the town, which were already swollen because of the continuous rains.

All barangays disaster teams were also advised to monitor, and remain on hightened alert to avoid possible loss of lives.
