Helen Reddy, the lifting voice behind 'I Am Woman,' passes away at 78

Helen Reddy, the singer behind the 1972 feminist song "I Am Woman," has passed away in Los Angeles. She was 78.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Helen Reddy, on the afternoon of September 29th 2020 in Los Angeles. She was a wonderful Mother, Grandmother and a truly formidable woman. Our hearts are broken. But we take comfort in the knowledge that her voice will live on forever," her children Traci and Jordan shared on Facebook.

The Australian-American singer charted three No. 1s on Billboard Hot 100 songs chart: the Grammy Award-winning “I Am Woman,” “Delta Dawn (1972)” and “Angie Baby (1974).”

In the Philippines, Reddy was known for her monster hits "I Can't Say Goodbye To You (1981)," "I Don't Know How To Love Him (1971)," and "(You and Me) Against The World (1974)."

In 1977, Reddy also starred in the musical film "Pete's Dragon." Its theme song "Candle On The Water" was nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars but it lost to "You Light Up My Life."
