Big PH feed millers ramps up local corn buying

Members of the Philippine Association of Feed Millers Inc.  (PAFMI), the largest group of feed millers in the Philippines, has intensified its local corn buying, so far purchasing 133,500 metric tons (MT) of the staple during the peak harvest season.

The local corn, according to the group, came from local corn from growers in Isabela, Bukidnon, General Santos, Ilo-ilo, Davao, and other provinces.

Roughly 17 members of PAFMI did the purchasing from August and September, which are the peak harvest months for the wet-season corn crop. The dry season harvest is in March and April. PAFMI is the biggest and oldest organization of feed millers in the Philippines with 33 member companies spread all over the country.

Some of PAFMI's members are San Miguel Corporation, Universal Robina Corporation, Philippine Foremost Milling Company, Pilmico Foods Inc., General Milling Corporation, and Vitarich Corporation. Combined, the group produces 70 percent of the country's feed output.

To recall, yellow corn is the preferred energy source in the animal feed formulation.

PAFMI's purchase came after Agriculture Secretary William Dar encouraged the feed milling industry to buy more local corn as an incentive for farmers to produce more of the feed stuff.

As a result, the DA and PAFMI are now set to sign a memorandum of agreement (MOA) in corn and soybeans contract growing in select provinces.

The MOA seeks to assure local farmers of a market for their produce, with technical assistance from DA and PAFMI providing the sure market.

Meanwhile, PAFMI raised concerns over the delays in the delivery of corn in Visayas and Mindanao.

“While deliveries in Luzon are going on relatively unhampered, distribution in Visayas and Mindanao are experiencing weather-caused delays,” PAFMI President Nicole Sarmiento-Garcia said.

“Frequent rains have slowed down deliveries and some corn stocks have been exposed to moisture, causing quality concerns. Rains and thunderstorms are expected in Northern Mindanao, including Bukidnon province, in the next 14 days,” she added.

The Philippines currently harvests 5.6 million metric tons of yellow corn for animal feed use.

PAFMI pointed out that this production still falls short of the national requirement of nearly 10 million MT. The shortage is filled with feed wheat and corn from ASEAN countries.
