AFC Cup: COVID-19 disrupts Vietnam hosting; United City's campaign on hold

The AFC Cup campaign of United City FC scheduled this month in Vietnam has been put on hold, Philippine Football Federation president Nonong Araneta said.

Araneta said the Vietnam Football Federation decided to beg off from hosting the remaining matches in Group G due to a sudden spike of COVID-19 cases in the said country.

Vietnam currently has more than 1,000 cases after a recent surge that began in the city of Danang.

On the other hand, there’s still no centralized venue for Group H where Kaya-Iloilo is bracketed.

“We have to look for another venue dito sa East so fluid pa masyado like in the case of Vietnam na tumaas ang kaso,” Araneta said, adding that the AFC will have to either finish or cancel the competition this year due to a change in commercial partner.

DDMC, a Chinese company, is set to take over from Lagardere Sports in 2021 after signing an eight-year partnership with the AFC.

“We have to finish the tournaments within this year because of our commitment sa mga sponsors. Kasi next year iba na yung marketing group namin next year. So we have to do it this year, otherwise our AFC revenues will be cut,” he said.
