The European Higher Education Fair (EHEF) 2020 goes online

We live in interesting times. The year has been tough, and will be remembered throughout history, aligned with the past plagues that shook the world. And while the current health crisis have brought everything to a halt, the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Philippines took the opportunity to champion higher education as an essential tool for young people to influence the world today and the future.
This Friday, up to Saturday, the EU Delegation will host the first-ever virtual European Higher Education Fair (EHEF). This year’s fair embraces digital transformation by staging the much-anticipated annual education fair live online, making it more accessible to Filipino students and members of the academe. This also extends the event’s reach to other provinces in the country.
This year’s theme is Study in Europe: The Future is EUrs, which further establishes EU as the Filipino youth’s gateway to excellence in higher education. The political and economic union of 27 states is known as one of the ultimate hubs for cross-fertilization of ideas, cutting-edge technology, and innovation coming from its many outstanding universities and higher education institutions (HEIs).
The link between Filipino students and the appeal of higher education in Europe can be traced back to the 1880s, when young Pinoy students traveled to Europe for a taste of its academic freedom and libertarian culture. National hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal, along with other ilustrados such as Juan Luna and Marcelo H. del Pilar, honed their intellect and kindled their aspirations for liberty and equality with European education.
EHEF 2020 provides the best platform to link Filipino students with EU universities and European higher education institutions (EHEIs). This year’s fair will feature webinars on research programs, sponsorships, and mobility opportunities. There will also be country presentations and live chats with EHEI representatives, alumni, and scholars. Virtual meeting rooms will be set up for Philippine higher education institutions (PHEIs) and their EU counterparts. Students will have a chance to explore opportunities for distance learning, with many EHEIs offering post-graduate degrees through distance education programs.

Utilizing modern technology to its fullest, EHEF is also going regional. Judge Benjamin D. Turgano, president of the Wesleyan University Philippines, thanks the EU Delegation for choosing his university as one of the regional hubs that will co-host EHEF 2020. The other regional hubs are Silliman University for Visayas, and Xavier University–Ateneo de Cagayan for Mindanao.
Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) is also a regional partner for Metro Manila. “Although circumstances have compelled us to be apart, events such as this serve as a venue for European and Philippine higher education institutions to establish long-lasting collaborations in terms of teaching, research, and outreach. We thank the organizers for their efforts in making this event a reality, and hope that all of the participants to EHEF 2020 will find it to be meaningful and informative,” says dean of the School of Social Sciences in ADMU, Fernando T. Aldaba, PhD.
Other partner universities of EHEF include De La Salle University, Rizal Technological University, Mindanao State University, Mabalacat City College, St Louis University Baguio, Tarlac Agricultural University, Ateneo de Davao, and Notre Dame–Tacurong College.
The event will take place from Oct. 2 to 3 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Meanwhile, a virtual networking event will also take place on the first day at 7:30 p.m.
EHEF 2020 is organized together with EU Member States’ Embassies in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
