DA distributes white corn seeds as prelude for farm consolidation and clustering in Isabela

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan - The Department of Agriculture- Regional Field Office 2 (DA-RFO2) has distributed white corn seeds as prelude for the establishmentof farm consolidation and clustering in Isabela province.

According to the report from the Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Section (RAFIS) of DA- RFO2, at least 50 bags of Open Pollinated Variety (OPV) of white corn seeds were given to the farmers of Sto. Tomas, Isabela on  September 24, 2020.

The white corn seeds were distributed to the farmers through the corn program of the DA-RFO2.

DA RFO2 Corn Program Coordinator Baby Jane Supapo said the white corn seeds’ distribution gears towards the promotion of farm and fishery consolidation and clustering program (F2C2) in Region 2 through White Corn Model Farm.

“The F2C2 is  one of the key strategies to step up the Philippine agriculture sector,” she said.

In a briefing on the implementing guidelines on white corn clustering, package of technology, and post-harvest activities; the recipients of corn seeds are the 50 prospective members of the association that will organize, which compose of the farmers from Barangays Cañogan Norte, Sur and San Vicente, all in Sto. Tomas town.

 “DA understands the battle cry of all farmers with issues at low buying price of corn. Kaya naman, sa pamamagitan ng bubuuin ninyong asosasyon, mas mapapabilis ang ibibigay na ayuda, programa at proyekto ng ahensya para sa inyo,” said Supapo.

“Huwag po tayong matakot na magtanim ng white glutinous corn dahil ang Agri-business Marketing Division (AMAD) ang maghahanap ng prospect buyers natin para mabenta sa tamang presyo ang inyong aning mais,” she added.

The distributed 50 white corn seeds were pre-positioned for this coming planting season.
Supapo said the association will undergo appropriate trainings, including coaching on corn enterprise development plans.

“The farmers will also equip with business ventures in post-production activities and will capacitate with training for farming growth through the technical experts from DA-RFO2 -
Cagayan Valley Research Center (CVRC),” she said.

Isabela Provincial Corn Coordinator Roynic Y. Aquino assured that the white corn growers’ association will prosperous and productive.

Meanwhile, Sto. Tomas Municipal Agriculturist Joel B. Tuliao said that this farm consolidation will take a good lead in encouraging more farmers to merge themselves with the hope to improve their lives.
