Abueva needs go signal from GAB - Mitra

The Games and Amusements Board is set to decide on whether to give back the professional license of suspended Phoenix Super LPG cager Calvin Abueva during its next board meeting.

GAB chairman Baham Mitra said the matter will be discussed after Abueva met with commissioner Eduard Trinidad at the government regulatory body for professional sports’ office in Makati City.

Abueva was joined by Fuel Masters interim coach Topex Robinson, who later posted an Instagram photo of him and Abueva suggesting that the two are heading to Clark, Pampanga for the PBA bubble.

Fuel Masters team manager Paolo Bugia later confirmed that Abueva will be permitted to take part in team practices inside the bubble, raising hopes of an eventual hardcourt return.

“Phoenix PBA player Calvin Abueva accompanied by Coach Topex Robinson went to visit the GAB to seek permission to play once again,” Mitra said in a statement. “Commissioner Eduard Trinidad did not commit anything and said that his request will be discussed and decided upon by the board in the next meeting.”

Mitra didn’t say when the board meeting will take place but Phoenix is hoping that it can be approved before the PBA restarts its season with the Philippine Cup on Oct. 11 at Angeles University Foundation.

Even if the license is returned, Mitra said Abueva is still required to undergo a seminar.

“He will undergo a seminar on ‘Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards of a Professional Athlete’ once the GAB Board decides to give back his license,” Mitra added.
