No sanction for bubble pull out - Marcial

But penalties are set for violators inside the facility in Clark

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial sees nothing wrong with players opting out of next month’s Clark bubble as long as they get an approval from their respective teams.

“Kung nagkasundo ang teams, okay sa akin,” Marcial said in Thursday’s virtual press conference announcing the provisional approval of the PBA bubble by the Inter-Agency Task Force.

Marcial was referring to the case of NLEX veterans Larry Fonacier and Cyrus Baguio, who begged off from joining the bubble due to personal reasons.

Fonacier became the first player to opt out as his wife is dealing with health issues before Baguio followed suit last Thursday.

NLEX management agreed to excuse Fonacier and Baguio from the bubble.

“Walang sanction dun kasi kung pinayagan ka, okay lang sa amin sa Commissioner’s Office. Ang problema pag di ka pinayagan. Dun tayo mag-uusap,” said Marcial.

Players have the option of not suiting up as long as they have properly informed their teams before the Philippine Cup restart on Oct. 11.

Prohibited are players, coaches and staff who will leave the bubble as it will violate the strict protocols that will be observed in Clark.

Violators face a fine of P100,000, a five-game suspension effective the following season and one-month salary deduction.

Marcial also said that sanctions will also be handed to non-PBA personnel who will leave the bubble, namely the TV crew and the five media that opted to cover the games for their respective dailies and online sites.

Teams are currently observing a five-day home quarantine period after taking their swab tests on Wednesday and Thursday. Those who will test negative can proceed to Clark on Sept. 28 and 29 but will undergo another test followed by a 24-hour hotel quarantine.

If results turn out negative again, teams can begin with doing 5-on-5 scrimmages in preparation for the PBA restart.
