Bambol vs Aranas for top POC post

Bambol Tolentino — POC President Bambol Tolentino will run for his reelection on Nov. 27, with Clint Aranas serving as his challenger.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Bambol Tolentino announced on Tuesday that he would run for the POC presidency in the upcoming elections on Nov. 27.

The Philcycling chief also revealed his partial ticket to the elections, which included Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio for first Vice President, and fencing and modern pentathlon federation chief Richard Gomez for second Vice President.

Other positions in the elections are chairman, treasure, auditor and four board members.

“Hindi naman natin tinatago. Definitely, I will run for president dahil hindi naman full term itong tinakbuhan ko. I just filled in the gap when Mr. (Ricky) Vargas resigned,” Tolentino said in the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum held online.

Tolentino won the POC presidency in a special election held last July 2019, a month after Vargas stepped down from his post.

Tolentino is expected to go head-to-head with archery chief Clint Aranas.

Filing of candidacy will start on Oct. 1 and end on Oct. 31.

Tolentino said the POC Executive Committee decided not to push through with the constitutional amendments that included plans to exclude candidates age 70 years old and above to run in POC polls.

“Napakasama naman nung image kung magkakaroon ng elections tapos sabayan ng cha-cha (charter change). Nakakahiya naman sa public, napaka-self serving ng dating,” he said.

“So gentleman’s agreement na lang na right after the election, saka na namin pag-uusapan yan.”
