COVID-19 infects 40 cops, 3 civilian staff in Western Visayas

ILOILO CITY—The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has infected 40 police officers and three non-uniformed personnel (NUP) in various police units in Western Visayas region.

Police Regional Office (PRO-6) released new data that three more were infected with COVID-19, as of Tuesday, September 1.

PRO-6 Spokesperson Police Lt. Joem Malong said the three new cases included two police officers assigned at PRO-6’s Regional Personnel and Human and Accounting Unit (RPHAU), but currently detailed at two different stations of Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO). The third new case was an NUP assigned at ICPO.

Prior to the three new cases, there were also four policemen and two other NUPs who were infected with the coronavirus.

The highest ranking officer who was infected with COVID-19 was Police Col. Julio Gustilo Jr., director of Capiz Police Provincial Office (CPPO).

Of the 43 combined COVID-19 cases in the region’s police force, only 26 are currently active.

“They are all asymptomatic and currently undergoing quarantine,” Malong told Manila Bulletin Wednesday, September 2.

Not all police units in the region have been testing their personnel as some have to rely on the local government units (LGUs).

Malong said that the local governments in Iloilo City and the towns in Iloilo province have been rigorous in testing frontline workers including cops.

She also admitted that PRO-6’s testing capacity of its own personnel at Camp Delgado, police regional headquarters in Iloilo City, was limited.
