Airing dates of ‘Coffee Prince’ documentary revealed

The hit 2007 Korean drama “Coffee Prince” is getting some sort of a reboot through a documentary that will see the cast reunite after 13 years.

Gong Yoo and Yoon Eun-hye will join co-stars Kim Dong-wook, Lee Sun-gyun, Kim Jae-wook and Chae Jung-an for the TV documentary.

According to MBC, the documentary was filmed in the drama’s two iconic Seoul locations: a coffee shop in the Hongdae area, which was used as the coffee shop in the drama, and the Sanmotoonge Cafe in Jongno, which served as Lee Sun-gyun’s house.

“Coffee Prince” is a 17-episode drama that aired in South Korea from July to August 2007. It became popular and drew its highest nationwide Nielsen Korea rating of 27.8 percent for its last episode. The drama also became popular in Asia including the Philippines where the original was aired in 2008 and a remake was released in 2012.

The “Coffee Prince” special will air on MBC’s “Youth Documentary 20, Again" in two parts: Sept. 24 and Oct. 1 at 10:40 p.m. Korea time.
"In fact, although they are stars who are rarely seen other than in dramas and movies, they are all willing to join and share that getting together with the cast of 'Coffee Prince' is an exception," said MBC, according to MyDaily.

MBC added, "Initially, after conducting personal interviews, the cast members watched each other's recording in the 'untact' form and expressed support as well as empathy for this. In fact, the shooting period overlapped social distancing practice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so we weren't sure whether the meeting would be made possible or not. However, thanks to the support of two coffee shops located in Seogyo Ward and Buam Ward, which were once the filming locations of 'Coffee Prince,' a surprise and thrilling encounter happened," the Korean TV station said.

The six stars revealed stories about their youth, watched scenes of “Coffee Prince” together and shared their behind-the-scenes stories.

“Coffee Prince” brought fame and awards to the cast. At the 2007 MBC Drama Awards, Yoon Eunh-hye and Gong Yoo took home acting awards. Yoon Eunh-hye also won best actress for TV at the 44th Baeksang Arts Awards and “Coffee Prince” won best drama at the 20th Korea PD Awards.
