Laugh out loud with the best talents Comedy Manila has to offer

The comedy production house will be hosting monthly comedy events to help you stay positive throughout the rest of 2020

When production house Comedy Manila moved their stand-up shows online last July, comedian Red Ollero told Manila Bulletin Lifestyle that the move is “a big diss to the pandemic.”

Their first few performances were an attempt to recreate their previously weekly live shows online. Having quickly found their digital stride, they are now planning to produce monthly shows for larger and larger audiences.

Comedy Manila’s upcoming performance, “The Longest Laughdown,” promises to be their best online gig yet. Live via Zoom on Sept. 26 at 8:30 p.m., the event will feature Red, Alex Calleja, GB Labrador, Yuki Horikoshi, and many more local talents.

The show’s name is a reference to the fact that the Philippines has imposed one of the longest community quarantines, sometimes referred to by the public as a lockdown, in the world. And while comedians may not have a direct say in when and how these regulations will be lifted, Comedy Manila promises to keep us laughing.

 “Our online shows are the closest thing you can get to the ones we do in bars and theatres,” Red tells us. “We have our audiences unmute their microphones and cameras so we can get live feedback from our sets.”

Comedy Manila encourages people to watch their shows as a way to connect with others, no matter where they may be, especially since every relationship is like a long-distance relationship nowadays.

“Online shows have their perks,” says Red, who opened for Fil-Am comedian Jo Koy earlier this the year. “You can watch it at home, so no need to worry about traffic. And since getting the venue is not a problem, people from all over the world have come to watch our shows too. We’ve had people who are in long-distance relationships go on dates through our shows, and families laughing together with their OFW relatives.”

Other perks of online shows include being able to bring your own food and drinks (no more spending on overpriced bar snacks and beverages) and getting to eat during the show without bothering others.

No matter what is going on in the world, we are social creatures, and it is heartwarming to see how we still look to connect to people and laugh with each other. Now more than ever the work of creatives, including comedians, provides a much-needed moment of escape and joy, away from the news. Comedy Manila’s performances may just be the monthlydose of local laughs that can help get you through the rest of 2020.

Early Bird tickets can be purchased via Ticket2Me for ₱500 until Sept. 20. Regular tickets will be available from Sept. 21 onward for ₱650. Ticketholders will be sent a Zoom link through which they will be able to watch “The Longest Laughdown” on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 8:30 p.m.
