COVID-19 cases cause partial shutdown of Aklan hospital

ILOILO CITY – The leading public hospital in Aklan province had to partially shut down its services after several health workers and patients were infected by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Dr. Cornelio Cuachon Jr., chief of the Aklan Provincial Health Office (APHO), confirmed that

The Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital (DRSTMH) in the capital town of Kalibo has temporarily stopped admitting new patients since Monday.

“We now have 19 infected health workers, front line workers and patients,” Cuachon told The Manila Bulletin in a phone interview Tuesday, September 15. 

From the initial 14, who were infected Monday, there were four more persons, who were infected. The number of COVID-19 cases may rise as hospital management was still conducting contact tracing.

Among those infected by COVID-19 were a nurse, medical technologist, laboratory staff, and an encoder.

“As of this time, the personnel are placed on isolation and medically managed,” the DRSTMH management said in a separate statement.

Cuachon said that temporarily closed were the intensive care units (ICUs), the clinical laboratory, the hemodialysis unit, and the blood bank center.

While the hospital’s outpatient department (OPD) was not closed, only 10 patients are being allowed entry for consultation at a time.

Meanwhile, the hospital management is conducting constant disinfection, and will reopen its other services once the spread of the coronavirus in the facility is contained.
