UAAP: Ex-PBA player Aris Dimaunahan expresses interest in coaching UST Tigers

Former PBA player Aris Dimaunahan expressed his interest to coach the University of Santo Tomas men’s basketball team, joining the long list of candidates that include mostly fellow alumni.

Dimaunahan said he submitted a letter of intent addressed to UST athletic director Fr. Ermito De Sagon O.P. on Monday, showing his willingness to help the university “in any way I can.”

Dimaunahan graduated with a degree in Commerce at UST but never had a chance to play in the UAAP.

While a student there, he became part of the Philippine Youth basketball team that won the gold medal at the 1996 Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA). He also competed in the ABC 18-Under.

He played for 10 years in the PBA for Barangay Ginebra, Air21 Express, Coca-Cola Tigers, Barako Bull and Alaska Aces, as well as for the San Miguel Beermen in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).

He was also an interim coach for the Blackwater Elite in the PBA last year.

Despite the departure of seven players in the wake of the Sorsogon training bubble controversy, more coaches are still interested in rebuilding the crumbling Tigers’ lair.

Among the candidates for the coaching staff are Siot Tanquingcen, Chris Cantonjos, Estong Ballesteros, Chris Gavina, Ed Cordero, Gilbert Lao and Potit De Vera.
