SEAG champion Princess Arbilon captures pentathlon bronze

TACLOBAN CITY – Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Princess Honey Arbilon settled for the bronze medal in the first edition of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) Laser All-Stars held recently at the Ormoc City Sports Complex.

Arbilon, 18, toppled Maryia Gnedtchick of Belarus, 4-1, in the battle for third place in the Women’s Junior (U22) division of the virtual laser-shooting competition.

The event, which coincides with the 3rd Pierre de Coubertin Pentathlon Day, brought pentathletes from 33 countries to compete in an online platform amid the pandemic.

Arbilon had a shot at the finals but bowed to Darcy Dryden of Great Britain, 4-2, to be relegated for the battle for bronze.

She blanked Nouran Beheiry of Egypt, 4-0, in the quarters, and prevailed over Sara Hajar Sediqi of Afghanistan, 4-0, and Marcela Mello of Brazil, 4-3, in the first two rounds.

The Philippine Modern Pentathlon Association was accepted as a regular member association in the Philippine Olympic Committee last December 2019. 

It is the only national team to be sponsored by a local government unit, which is the City Government of Ormoc.

Almost all national athletes are locals and supported by the city government. 

The association bagged two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals in the 30th SEA Games that the country hosted last December.
